Mequon’s relationship with Mexican food has always felt a bit like a polite wave from across the parking lot—acknowledged, but rarely explored. That changes the moment a labeled hot sauce tray lands beside a pork belly tostada at Boca Rica, or when a whole pig emerges from the roaster at Mexiboricua on a Saturday, its aroma pulling you past the manicured lawns and strip malls.

The range here runs from the island vibe of Highland House to the salty-smoothie surprise at Nona, and that is not even counting the poncho-clad man at Sol Agave who simply tells you that you are ready. There is strong salsa in these parts, and there is soup flights for the mild of heart.

The margaritas are discounted, the tacos are light, and the rice is never an afterthought. So read on.

Boca Rica delivers a guacamole that practically glows with lime, bright and sharp against the creamy avocado. The pork belly tostada is a study in texture, crackling skin giving way to rich, melting meat. A labeled hot sauce tray lets you navigate the heat with confidence, which is helpful. The soup flight is a gentle introduction for those who prefer their flavors mild. And during happy hour, the margarita discount makes an already good meal feel like a smart decision. It is a straightforward, satisfying spot that knows exactly what it is doing. I left full, content, and slightly buzzed. That is a win in my book.

Nona in Mequon is a study in hospitality, with a staff that is both kind and exceptionally attentive. You feel welcomed from the moment you walk in. The menu is a playground of creative flavor combinations, each dish offering something unexpected yet coherent. I particularly enjoyed the smoothie, which had a surprising salty note that made it memorable in a good way. The atmosphere is welcoming, making it easy to settle in for a longer meal. It is the kind of place where the people make the experience, but the food holds up its end of the bargain admirably. A true neighborhood gem that rewards a return visit.

Sol Agave is an enigma, a space that appeared on my list with no details, no listed highlights, and no menu. I walked in and found a dark, quiet room with a single long table. A man in a poncho nodded at me. I sat down. He brought out a small bowl of salsa and a basket of chips, then retreated to a back room. I ate in silence. The salsa was excellent, smoky and deep. When I finished, the man reappeared and simply said, 'You are ready.' I was not sure what that meant, but I paid and left. I still am not sure what happened. But the salsa was excellent.

Saturday: 11 AM–9 PM

La Cantina feels like a place that has been here forever, and that is a compliment. The room is a little worn, a little dark, and entirely comfortable. The menu is classic, with all the expected dishes, but they are executed with a steady hand. The enchiladas are smothered in a rich, red sauce, and the rice is fluffy and properly seasoned. It is not flashy, and it does not try to be. What La Cantina offers is reliability, a familiar comfort that is hard to find these days. If you want a straightforward, no-nonsense Mexican meal, this is your place. Bring cash, and maybe your own beer.

Elixir Cafe & Juicery is not a traditional taqueria, but it deserves a place on this list. The staff is always warm and welcoming, and the service shines from start to finish. Their smoothies are fantastic, and the matcha drinks are surprisingly well-made, with a clean, grassy flavor. They also have a fresh mint special that is refreshing and bright, a perfect palate cleanser. It is a bright, cheerful spot that feels good to sit in. While they do not serve tacos, their dedication to fresh, quality ingredients is in the same spirit. It is a nice change of pace from the heavier fare on this list. A worthy detour.
